Orthodontist Emergency Care

Orthodontic treatment is designed to improve your smile safely and gradually. However, minor orthodontic emergencies can occasionally happen while wearing braces, aligners, or other orthodontic appliances. At Obaisi Orthodontics in Chicago, IL, Dr. Noor Obaisi and our team are here to help you manage unexpected issues and keep your treatment on track.

Most orthodontic emergencies fall into two general categories:

  • Issues related to orthodontic appliances such as loose brackets or poking wires
  • Direct injuries to the mouth or teeth

Understanding how to handle these situations can help reduce discomfort until our team can evaluate the issue.

Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances

Sometimes orthodontic appliances may bend, loosen, or break during treatment. While these situations are usually not urgent, they can cause irritation or discomfort.

If you notice a problem such as a loose bracket, loose band, or poking wire, contact Obaisi Orthodontics during regular office hours so we can schedule an appointment to correct it.

In the meantime, the following tips may help relieve irritation:

  • Irritating wire: Cover the area with orthodontic wax or gently tuck the wire under the archwire using a clean pencil eraser or cotton swab.
  • Loose bracket or band: Leave it in place until your appointment. Our team will safely reattach it if necessary.
  • Poking archwire: If it’s causing irritation, carefully bend it with a pencil eraser or trim it with clean nail clippers if possible.

If the discomfort continues or you are unsure what to do, call our office so we can guide you.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth or Teeth

A direct injury to the mouth, teeth, or jaw requires immediate attention. This type of injury can occur during sports activities, accidents, or other trauma.

If this happens:

  1. Apply ice to the injured area right away to reduce swelling.
  2. Contact your general dentist as soon as possible, especially if a tooth is chipped, displaced, or knocked out.
  3. Once the injury has been evaluated, Dr. Noor Obaisi can adjust or repair any orthodontic appliances affected by the incident.

In some cases, an X-ray may be needed to determine the extent of the injury.

After-Hours Orthodontic Emergencies

If an orthodontic issue causes significant pain outside of office hours, please contact our office for instructions on how to reach the on-call provider.

Our goal is to make sure you receive the care and guidance you need as quickly as possible.

What Counts as an Orthodontic Emergency?

Not every issue with braces or aligners requires urgent care. Many minor problems, such as a loose bracket or mild wire irritation, can be temporarily managed at home until your scheduled appointment.

However, you should contact our office right away if you experience:

  • Severe pain or swelling
  • A traumatic injury to the mouth or jaw
  • A broken appliance causing significant discomfort
  • A tooth that has been knocked loose or displaced

If you’re unsure whether your situation is urgent, our team is happy to help you decide the next steps.

How Can I Prevent Orthodontic Emergencies?

Many orthodontic issues can be avoided by following a few simple precautions during treatment:

  • Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can damage braces.
  • Wear a protective mouthguard during sports or physical activities.
  • Follow Dr. Noor Obaisi’s care instructions for braces, aligners, and elastics.
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene and attend your regular orthodontic visits.

Taking these steps helps keep your treatment progressing smoothly and comfortably.
